The Secret Sharer

by Joseph Conrad

About 1 h 07 min of reading2 chapters

The Secret Sharer, written in 1909 and collected in 'Twixt Land and Sea in 1912, is one of Joseph Conrad's most compact and most discussed tales. A young captain, a stranger to his own ship and crew, is taking his first night watch alone in the Gulf of Siam when he finds a naked swimmer clinging to the side ladder. The man, Leggatt, is chief mate of a ship anchored nearby and has killed a sailor during a storm; the captain hides him in his cabin, and for days the two share a secret, a stateroom and, it seems, an identity, while the officers grow suspicious. The story ends with a desperate maneuver close under the cliffs of an island. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
