Tales of Unrest
Tales of Unrest, published in 1898, is Joseph Conrad's first collection of short stories. It contains five pieces. Karain: A Memory tells of a Malay chief haunted by a ghost of his own making; The Idiots is set among Breton peasants; An Outpost of Progress follows two incompetent white traders left alone at a remote station in Africa, a bleak forerunner of Heart of Darkness; The Return is a domestic drama set in London; and The Lagoon, the first short story Conrad wrote, is a tale of love and betrayal told by night on a Malayan river. In his note Conrad reflects on how the stories mark the end of his first, Malayan phase. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
