Nostromo, published in 1904, is Joseph Conrad's longest and most ambitious novel, set in the imaginary South American republic of Costaguana. The silver of the San Tome mine, worked by the Englishman Charles Gould in the belief that material interests will bring order, becomes the prize in a revolution that engulfs the port of Sulaco; the Italian sailor Nostromo, the incorruptible man of the people, is sent to carry a lighter of silver out to sea with the journalist Decoud, and what becomes of the silver and of him is the book's secret. Around them Conrad arranges Mrs. Gould, the skeptic Dr. Monygham, old Viola and his daughters, and tells the story out of order; it is dedicated to John Galsworthy.
