Lord Jim
Lord Jim, published in 1900, is Joseph Conrad's novel about a single failure and a lifetime spent trying to live it down. Jim, a young English officer on the pilgrim ship Patna, abandons the vessel with the rest of the crew when it seems about to sink; the ship does not sink, and he alone stays to face the inquiry. Disgraced, he drifts from port to port in the East until the trader Stein sends him to the remote settlement of Patusan, where he becomes Tuan Jim, protector of the people, and is given a second chance that he must finally pay for. The story is told mostly by Marlow, who cannot decide whether Jim is a hero or a dreamer. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
