Ursula, a schoolteacher, and Gudrun, an artist back from London, live in the Midlands colliery town of Beldover. Ursula is drawn to Rupert Birkin, a school inspector in flight from society and from himself; Gudrun to Gerald Crich, the mine owner's son who runs the pits as a machine. The two couples quarrel, make love and test each other in a series of charged scenes, from a wrestling bout to a wedding to a drowning, before the book moves to the snow of the Alps for its conclusion.
