Sons and Lovers
Sons and Lovers, published in 1913, is D. H. Lawrence's third novel and the one in which he turned his own youth into fiction. Gertrude Morel, a former schoolteacher of refined tastes, has married a Nottinghamshire miner, Walter, and as the marriage sours she pours her ambition into her sons, first William, who dies in London, then Paul, a painter by inclination. Paul's attachments to two women, the spiritual Miriam Leivers and the married Clara Dawes, are shadowed at every turn by his bond with his mother. The mining village, the farm and the countryside between are rendered with a physical exactness new in English fiction. The novel ends with Paul alone, turning toward the lights of the town.
