Lady Chatterley's lover

by D. H. Lawrence

About 7 h 51 min of reading19 chapters

Lady Chatterley's Lover was the last novel D. H. Lawrence wrote. He printed it privately in Florence in 1928, knowing no publisher would touch it, and the unexpurgated text was not legally sold in England until the Penguin trial of 1960. Constance Chatterley is married to a baronet paralyzed from the waist down in the war, who runs his Midlands collieries and his intellectual circle from a wheelchair. Her affair with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors, is the center of the book, and Lawrence describes it in words that were the whole ground of the obscenity cases. Around it he sets an indictment of industrial England and the deadness of the educated classes, and a plea for tenderness between men and women. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
