David Herbert Lawrence (1885–1930) was an English novelist, poet and essayist, the son of a Nottinghamshire coal miner and a former schoolteacher, a background he drew on in Sons and Lovers. In 1912 he eloped with Frieda Weekley, the German wife of his former professor, and the two spent most of their lives wandering through Italy, Australia, Mexico and New Mexico. The Rainbow was prosecuted for obscenity in 1915; Women in Love followed, and Lady Chatterley's Lover, printed privately in 1928, could not be sold openly in Britain until 1960. He died of tuberculosis in the south of France at forty-four.
