The Rainbow
The Rainbow, published in 1915, follows three generations of the Brangwen family of Marsh Farm, on the Erewash between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, as the old rural world gives way to collieries, canals and towns. Tom Brangwen marries Lydia Lensky, a Polish widow; her daughter Anna fights her way into a turbulent marriage with Will Brangwen; and their daughter Ursula, the true center of the book, goes out into the world as a teacher and a student in search of a freedom her mother never had. D. H. Lawrence writes of desire, marriage and belief with new frankness, and the novel was prosecuted for obscenity and suppressed in Britain the year it appeared.
