"Wee Tim'rous Beasties": Studies of Animal life and Character
"Wee Tim'rous Beasties," which takes its title from Robert Burns's poem to a mouse, is a book of animal stories by Douglas English, a naturalist and early wildlife photographer, illustrated with about a hundred and fifty of his photographs of living creatures. Its short chapters, several first printed in magazines and gathered with a preface dated 1903, follow small British animals through their lives: a mouse and a field vole, the house sparrow, the dormouse waking from hibernation, the purple emperor butterfly, the harvest mouse, a newt, the black rat and the hedgehog. English gives each creature a voice and a character, but his stories rest on close observation of real behavior.
