Verses
Violet Jacob, born into the Erskine family of Dun in Angus, published this first collection of poems in 1905, after years in India as the wife of an army officer. The fifty-odd pieces are mostly short lyrics in standard English, on memory, the sea, Northern landscapes, a Norse ballad, Egypt, a flute player and a mill-house, with three poems for children at the end. Her later and better-known work, including Songs of Angus, would be written in Scots and make her one of the leading voices of the Scottish literary revival; here that voice is still forming, in poems that are plain, musical and often touched by loss. The poems are available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first ones are free.
