India's Love Lyrics

by Laurence Hope

About 1 h 30 min of reading81 chapters

Short lyrics of desire, jealousy, loss and death, written in the voices of Indian and Central Asian speakers: a Kashmiri girl, a Pathan warrior, a dancing girl, a soldier leaving Burma. "Laurence Hope" was the pen name of Adela Florence Nicolson, the wife of a British officer in India, and the poems were first published in London in 1901 as The Garden of Kama; American editions renamed them India's Love Lyrics. Readers assumed the author was a man and the poems were translations, which they are not. "Kashmiri Song," beginning "Pale hands I loved beside the Shalimar," was set to music and sung in drawing rooms for decades. The collection is frank about physical passion for its time. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first poems are free.
