Paradise Lost
An epic poem in twelve books on the fall of man. It begins in Hell, where Satan and his fallen angels, defeated in their rebellion against God, rouse themselves to a new war by corruption rather than force. Satan crosses Chaos to the newly created world, finds Adam and Eve in Eden and, after being driven out once, returns as a serpent. The middle books tell, through the archangel Raphael, of the war in Heaven and the creation; the last two show the consequences of the fall and a vision of human history to come. Milton, blind and politically defeated after the Restoration, dictated the poem and published it in 1667, then rearranged it into twelve books in 1674. Its blank verse has shaped English poetry since. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first book is free.
