Paradise Regained
Paradise Regained, published in 1671, is John Milton's brief epic and the sequel to Paradise Lost. Where the earlier poem told how Paradise was lost through one man's disobedience, this one tells how it is recovered through one man's obedience, by taking as its subject the temptation of Christ in the wilderness after his baptism. In four books of blank verse, Satan tests the Son of God with hunger, wealth, glory, the power of Rome and the learning of Athens, and is answered each time with calm refusal. The poem is quieter and more argumentative than Paradise Lost, a long dialogue on true kingship and inner strength.
