Violet Jacob (1863–1946) was a Scottish writer born Violet Kennedy-Erskine at the House of Dun near Montrose, the daughter of a landed Angus family. She married an army officer and spent years in India, and published historical novels, among them The Sheep-Stealers and Flemington, before turning to the poetry in Scots dialect, Songs of Angus in 1915 and its successors, that made her a leading figure of the Scottish literary revival; Hugh MacDiarmid praised her. Verses, her first collection of 1905, is in English. Her only son was killed at the Somme in 1916, and much of her later work is shadowed by it.
