Utilitarianism

by John Stuart Mill

About 1 h 51 min of reading5 chapters

Utilitarianism, published in 1861 and as a book in 1863, is John Stuart Mill's defense of the doctrine that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness. In five chapters Mill explains what the principle means, answers the charge that it is a philosophy fit only for swine by distinguishing higher pleasures from lower ones, considers what sanctions can bind people to it, offers a proof of sorts, and shows how the demands of justice can be derived from utility. It is the clearest short statement of a theory that has shaped law, economics and public policy for two centuries, and its line about preferring to be Socrates dissatisfied rather than a fool satisfied is still argued over. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
