A System of Logic, Ratiocinative and Inductive

by John Stuart Mill

About 27 h 24 min of reading83 chapters

A System of Logic, published in 1843, is John Stuart Mill's attempt to give the methods of the empirical sciences a philosophical foundation. He begins with names and propositions, examines the syllogism and argues that all real inference is from particulars to particulars, and then devotes the heart of the book to induction: the uniformity of nature, the law of causation, and the four methods, of agreement, difference, residues and concomitant variations, by which causes are found. Later books treat fallacies and the possibility of a science of human nature and society. The work went through eight editions in Mill's lifetime and set the terms of debate about scientific reasoning for half a century. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
