John Stuart Mill (1806–1873) was an English philosopher, economist and public servant, the most influential English-speaking thinker of the nineteenth century. Educated at home by his father, he read Greek at three and suffered a breakdown at twenty, which he described in his Autobiography. He worked for the East India Company for thirty-five years and sat in Parliament from 1865 to 1868, where he proposed votes for women. His System of Logic, Principles of Political Economy, On Liberty, Utilitarianism, Considerations on Representative Government and The Subjection of Women were written in close partnership with Harriet Taylor, whom he married in 1851 and beside whose grave in Avignon he is buried.
