Principles of Political Economy

by John Stuart Mill

Abridged with Critical, Bibliographical, and Explanatory Notes, and a Sketch of the History of Political Economy

About 15 h 50 min of reading281 chapters

John Stuart Mill's Principles of Political Economy, first published in 1848, was the standard textbook of economics in the English-speaking world for forty years. This is the abridgment that J. Laurence Laughlin of Harvard prepared for American students in 1884, which keeps Mill's text on production, distribution, exchange, the influence of social progress, and the role of government, while cutting some of the longer discussions and adding a sketch of the history of political economy, notes on American conditions such as the tariff and bimetallism, charts, bibliographies and examination questions. Mill's achievement was to combine Ricardo's analysis with a humane concern for the laboring classes and an openness to cooperation and reform, and both survive the abridgment. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
