Treatises on Friendship and Old Age
This volume pairs two short dialogues Cicero wrote in 44 BC, the last full year of his life, in the translation of Evelyn S. Shuckburgh. On Friendship (Laelius de Amicitia) puts into the mouth of Laelius, mourning the younger Scipio, a discussion of what friendship is, how it arises from virtue rather than need, how far one friend may ask another to go, and how friendships end. On Old Age (Cato Maior de Senectute) has the elder Cato answer the four complaints against age, that it withdraws us from affairs, weakens the body, takes away pleasure and brings death near, with examples from Roman history. Both were written as consolation in a year of political ruin. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
