The republic of Cicero

by Marcus Tullius Cicero

Translated from the Latin; and Accompanied With a Critical and Historical Introduction.

Translated by George William FeatherstonhaughAbout 2 h 18 min of reading9 chapters

Cicero wrote his dialogue On the Republic in the 50s BC, as the Roman Republic slid toward civil war, and for centuries it was known only from fragments, until large parts were found in a palimpsest in the Vatican Library and published by Cardinal Angelo Mai in 1822. Set in the garden of Scipio Aemilianus, it discusses the best form of government, defends a constitution mixing monarchy, aristocracy and democracy, and traces the history of Rome as its model. This translation by George William Featherstonhaugh, an English-born geologist who settled in America, includes a critical and historical introduction on the recovery of the text. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
