Cicero's Tusculan Disputations
Also, Treatises On The Nature Of The Gods, And On The Commonwealth
This volume gathers three of Cicero's philosophical works in the translation of Charles Duke Yonge. The Tusculan Disputations, written in 45 BC at his villa after the death of his daughter, are five dialogues on the contempt of death, on bearing pain, on grief, on the other disorders of the soul and on whether virtue alone is enough for a happy life. On the Nature of the Gods sets Epicurean, Stoic and skeptical speakers arguing whether gods exist and care for the world. On the Commonwealth, which survives only in part, is Cicero's dialogue on the best form of government and the duties of a statesman, and includes the famous dream of Scipio. Together they show Cicero making Greek philosophy speak Latin. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
