The Letters of Cicero, Volume 1
The Whole Extant Correspodence in Chronological Order
The Letters of Cicero, in Evelyn S. Shuckburgh's translation published in 1899, give the whole surviving correspondence in chronological order. This first volume covers the years 68 to 52 BC, from Cicero's early letters to his friend Atticus about the purchase of statues and his brother's marriage, through his consulship and the suppression of Catiline, the rise of Pompey and Caesar, his own exile in 58 and triumphant return the following year, and his uneasy accommodation with the men who now ruled Rome. The letters to Atticus, to his brother Quintus and to political allies show him anxious, vain, affectionate and acute, and they are the most intimate record that survives of any ancient life. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
