Treatise on Poisons
In relation to medical jurisprudence, physiology, and the practice of physic
A Treatise on Poisons, in Relation to Medical Jurisprudence, Physiology, and the Practice of Physic was the standard British work on toxicology for a generation, written by Robert Christison, professor of medical jurisprudence at Edinburgh, and here in the fourth edition of 1845. The first part treats poisoning in general: how poisons act, how their presence is proved from symptoms, post-mortem appearances, chemical analysis and experiments on animals, and how imaginary or imputed poisoning is detected. The second part takes the poisons individually, the mineral acids, arsenic, mercury, lead and the other metals, the vegetable narcotics and irritants, poisonous fungi and grain, alcohol and the gases, giving for each the tests, the symptoms, the appearances and the treatment. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
