The Wonders of the Invisible World
Being an Account of the Tryals of Several Witches Lately Executed in New-England, to which is added A Farther Account of the Tryals of the New-England Witches
The Wonders of the Invisible World was published by Cotton Mather in Boston in 1693, in the immediate aftermath of the Salem witch trials, as a defense of the court that had hanged nineteen people. Mather sets out the doctrine of the devil's assaults on New England, reproduces the celebrated English trial before Sir Matthew Hale as a precedent, and then gives his own accounts of the Salem trials of George Burroughs, Bridget Bishop, Susanna Martin, Elizabeth How and Martha Carrier, built from the depositions. This edition adds the Cases of Conscience Concerning Evil Spirits by his father Increase Mather, which questioned spectral evidence and helped bring the prosecutions to an end, and an introduction on the whole episode.
