The Witchcraft Delusion in New England: Its Rise, Progress, and Termination, (Vol. 1 of 3)
This first volume of The Witchcraft Delusion in New England, edited by Samuel G. Drake and published in 1866, reprints The Wonders of the Invisible World, the defense of the Salem witch trials that Cotton Mather wrote in 1692 and 1693; Robert Calef's reply occupies the later volumes. After Drake's introduction and memoir of Mather, the volume gives Mather's argument that New England was under diabolical attack, an abstract of William Perkins's method for discovering witches, and his accounts of the trials of George Burroughs, Bridget Bishop, Susanna Martin, Elizabeth How and Martha Carrier, all executed. It is a central document of the tragedy. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
