The Voyage Out
The Voyage Out, published in 1915, is Virginia Woolf's first novel. Rachel Vinrace, twenty-four, motherless and brought up by maiden aunts to play the piano and know nothing, sails on her father's ship to a resort on the coast of South America with her uncle Ridley Ambrose and his wife Helen, who decides to educate her. At the hotel in Santa Marina a company of English visitors assembles, and Rachel is drawn toward the young writer Terence Hewet. The Dalloways, who will have a novel of their own, come aboard for a passage. Woolf's later method is here in embryo: long conversations, sudden shifts of consciousness, and a sense that the real events are the ones no one speaks of.
