Night and Day, published in 1919, is Virginia Woolf's second novel and her most conventional in form. Katharine Hilbery, granddaughter of a great Victorian poet, pours tea in Cheyne Walk and helps her mother with a biography that will never be finished, while privately preferring mathematics to literature. Around her gather the solicitor's clerk Ralph Denham, who resents and loves her, the suffrage worker Mary Datchet, who loves Ralph, the fastidious William Rodney, to whom Katharine becomes engaged, and her cousin Cassandra. Over a London winter of walks, letters and misdirected visits the couples sort themselves out. Woolf dedicated the book to her sister Vanessa Bell, and Katharine's silences and daydreams point toward the inward method of her later work.
