About 13 min of reading1 chapters

"Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street" is a short story Virginia Woolf published in The Dial in July 1923, and the seed of her novel Mrs Dalloway, which appeared two years later. On a June morning Clarissa Dalloway, a member of political society, walks from Westminster to Bond Street to buy a pair of gloves. The story stays almost entirely within her mind as she goes: the chimes of Big Ben, passing acquaintances, memories of her girlhood and of the war dead, thoughts about age, class, the city and the shop girl who serves her, until a sudden noise outside breaks the scene. It shows Woolf trying out the method of her later fiction in a few pages. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the opening pages free.
