Mrs. Dalloway

by Virginia Woolf

About 4 h 16 min of reading1 chapters

On a June morning in 1923, Clarissa Dalloway, the wife of a Conservative member of Parliament, goes out to buy flowers for the party she is giving that evening. The novel follows her day through London and in and out of the minds of the people she passes and remembers: Peter Walsh, who loved her thirty years ago and has just returned from India; Sally Seton, whom she once kissed; her daughter Elizabeth; and Septimus Warren Smith, a shell-shocked veteran she never meets, whose day runs beside hers toward a different end. Published in 1925, the novel has no chapter divisions and moves by association, with the striking of Big Ben to mark the hours. It is Woolf's most approachable novel.
