Monday or Tuesday
Monday or Tuesday, published by the Hogarth Press in 1921, is the only collection of short fiction Virginia Woolf issued in her lifetime. Its eight pieces range from "A Haunted House," in which a ghostly couple search a sleeping house for their buried treasure, to "An Unwritten Novel," where a woman on a train becomes the subject of a story that the narrator invents and then loses, and "The Mark on the Wall," a chain of thought set off by a spot on the plaster. "Kew Gardens," "The String Quartet" and the brief "Blue & Green" experiment with light, sound and passing voices. Written between 1917 and 1921, these sketches are the laboratory for the novels that followed. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
