The Three Voyages of William Barents to the Arctic Regions (1594, 1595, and 1596)
Gerrit de Veer sailed with the Dutch expeditions that tried to reach China by sailing north of Russia, and his account of the three voyages of 1594, 1595 and 1596 was first published in Amsterdam in 1598. The first two voyages, to Novaya Zemlya and the Vaigach Strait, were turned back by ice. On the third the ship was trapped off Novaya Zemlya, and the crew, among them the pilot Willem Barentsz, spent the winter in a house built from driftwood, fighting cold, scurvy and polar bears, before setting out in open boats in the summer of 1597. This Hakluyt Society edition, edited by Charles T. Beke, reprints the English translation of 1609. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
