The sexual question
The Sexual Question, by the Swiss psychiatrist Auguste Forel, appeared in German in 1905 and in this English adaptation by C. F. Marshall soon after. Forel, former director of the Burghölzli asylum in Zurich, attempts a comprehensive scientific, psychological, hygienic and sociological study of sexual life. He begins with reproduction and evolution, the physiology of sex and the sexual appetite, then discusses love and its effects on the mind, the history and ethnology of marriage, pathology, venereal disease, prostitution, religion, law, medicine, education and art. The book was influential in its frankness and its call for sex education, though its eugenic proposals and some of its views on race and women are now rejected. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
