The Seri Indians. (1898 N 17
1895-1896 (pages 1-344*))
The Seri Indians is W J McGee's monograph on one of the least known peoples of North America, published in 1898 as part of the seventeenth annual report of the Bureau of American Ethnology. The Seri lived on Tiburon Island in the Gulf of California and the adjoining Sonora coast, cut off from Mexican settlement by desert and warfare, and McGee visited them on expeditions in 1894 and 1895. He describes their country, plants and animals, summarizes their history from Coronado onward, and treats their physique, face painting, food and food-getting, boats, houses, dress, tools, warfare, clans, marriage and funeral customs, and language, with a report by Ales Hrdlicka on a skeleton and comparative Seri and Yuman vocabularies.
