The Renaissance: Studies in Art and Poetry

by Walter Pater

About 3 h 56 min of reading11 chapters

Walter Pater's Studies in the History of the Renaissance, published in 1873 and retitled The Renaissance in later editions, made its author the most influential critic of his generation and a scandal to Oxford. Its essays treat two early French stories, Pico della Mirandola, Botticelli, Luca della Robbia, the poetry of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, with the famous passage on the Mona Lisa, the school of Giorgione, Joachim du Bellay and Winckelmann. The preface defines the critic's task as recording his own impressions, and the conclusion, withdrawn from the second edition for fear of misleading young men and later restored, urges the reader to burn always with a hard, gem-like flame. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first essay is free.
