The Psychology of Singing

by David C. Taylor

A Rational Method of Voice Culture Based on a Scientific Analysis of All Systems, Ancient and Modern

About 4 h 32 min of reading33 chapters

The Psychology of Singing, published in 1908 by the New York vocal teacher David C. Taylor, is an argument against the way singing was taught in his day. In its first parts Taylor reviews the modern doctrines of breath control, registers, resonance and forward emission and the methods built on them, then sets out to show that conscious mechanical management of the voice is a fallacy, that the singer cannot direct muscles he cannot feel, and that the attempt produces the stiff throats and short careers of the age. The old Italian masters, he argues, taught by ear and imitation, and a rational method must return to that empirical knowledge of tone. A bibliography and index close the book.
