The Principles of Scientific Management
The Principles of Scientific Management, published in 1911, is Frederick Winslow Taylor's short statement of the ideas that made him the first management consultant and a byword for efficiency. Drawing on his years at the Midvale and Bethlehem steel works, Taylor argues that every task should be studied with a stopwatch, broken into its elements and redesigned to find the one best way, that workers should be selected and trained for it and paid by results, and that planning should be separated from execution. His examples, the pig-iron handler Schmidt, the shoveling experiments, the bricklayers, are still cited. Taylorism was attacked for treating people as machinery, but its influence on factories, offices and the modern organization has been enormous.
