The Philosophy of Natural Theology

by William Jackson

An Essay in confutation of the scepticism of the present day

About 10 h 47 min of reading34 chapters

The Philosophy of Natural Theology is a prize essay that William Jackson, a clergyman and former fellow of Worcester College, wrote in answer to an Oxford competition and published in the 1870s, at the height of the debates set off by Darwin. Subtitled an essay in confutation of the skepticism of the present day, it argues that the evidence of design in nature still points to a creator, engaging with evolution, materialism, spontaneous generation and the doctrine of chance, and quoting contemporary scientists and critics as well as Gladstone. Extensive notes follow each chapter. It is a careful document of how Victorian Christians tried to answer scientific naturalism on its own ground. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
