Beyond Good and Evil

by Friedrich Nietzsche

Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future

Translated by Helen Zimmern and L. A. MagnusAbout 4 h 15 min of reading310 chapters

Nietzsche called this book a prelude to a philosophy of the future. In nine parts and nearly three hundred numbered sections, from a sentence to several pages long, it attacks the philosophers' faith in truth, dissects the religious instinct, proposes that morality has a natural history, and sketches the free spirit who could live without the old certainties. It appeared in 1886, between Thus Spake Zarathustra and the Genealogy of Morals, and is the most accessible statement of his mature thought, though it asks to be read slowly and against the grain. This edition presents Helen Zimmern's translation, the first in English, with the closing poem rendered by L. A. Magnus. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first part free.
