Thus Spake Zarathustra
A Book for All and None
After ten years alone on a mountain, Zarathustra comes down to teach men that God is dead and that they must create their own values, aiming at the Superman and accepting the eternal recurrence of all things. The book is cast as a kind of gospel, in four parts of short discourses, parables, songs and visions, and Nietzsche thought it his most important work, written in bursts between 1883 and 1885. It is also his strangest, by turns prophetic, lyrical and parodic, and it has been quoted by people who agree about nothing else. This edition presents the text in Thomas Common's translation, the one through which English readers first encountered it. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first part free.
