Human, All Too Human: A Book for Free Spirits

by Friedrich Nietzsche

Translated by Alexander HarveyAbout 2 h 28 min of reading156 chapters

Human, All Too Human, first published in 1878, marks the turn in Friedrich Nietzsche's thought away from Wagner and Schopenhauer toward the aphoristic, skeptical style of his maturity. Written during a period of illness, it is a book of short numbered observations rather than an argument. This edition presents Alexander Harvey's 1908 translation of the 1886 preface and the first three sections: Of the First and Last Things, on metaphysics and the origins of our concepts; The History of the Moral Feelings, which traces morality back to custom, fear and usefulness; and The Religious Life, on asceticism and the saint. It is a selection, not the complete work, but it gives the flavor of Nietzsche's first experiment in free thinking. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
