The Philosophy of Fine Art, volume 3 (of 4)
Hegel's Aesthetik
Hegel's lectures on aesthetics, delivered at Berlin in the 1820s and published from his notes and his students' after his death, were translated into English by F. P. B. Osmaston in four volumes in 1920. This third volume contains the first portion of the Third Part, the system of the particular arts, in which the general theory of the earlier volumes is applied to the arts one by one. After a division of the subject according to the senses they address, Hegel treats architecture in its symbolic, classical and romantic forms, then sculpture, its principle and its historical stages, and finally the romantic arts of painting and music. Poetry, which completes the system, follows in the fourth volume. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
