Hegel's Lectures on the History of Philosophy: Volume 1 (of 3)
Hegel's Lectures on the History of Philosophy, Volume 1 is the first of three volumes in the translation of Elizabeth Sanderson Haldane, published in 1892. The lectures were given at Berlin in the 1820s and compiled by Hegel's students after his death. The long introduction sets out his view that the history of philosophy is itself philosophy, each system a necessary stage in the development of the one idea. After a brief treatment of Chinese and Indian thought, the volume covers the Greeks from Thales to the Socratic schools: the Ionians, Pythagoras, the Eleatics, Heraclitus, Empedocles, the atomists and Anaxagoras, then the Sophists, Socrates, and the Megarics, Cyrenaics and Cynics who followed him. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
