Hegel's Aesthetik

Translated by Francis Plumptre Beresford OsmastonAbout 11 h 11 min of reading15 chapters

This is the first volume of F. P. B. Osmaston's translation of Hegel's lectures on aesthetics, published in 1920 as the first complete English version of the lectures his pupil Hotho had compiled in 1835. It contains the long introduction, in which Hegel defines art as the sensuous appearance of the Idea, dismisses imitation of nature as its purpose, distinguishes the symbolic, classical and romantic forms, and then the first part, on the Idea of fine art or the Ideal: the position of art relative to religion and philosophy, the notion of the beautiful, the beauty of nature and the beauty of art as the Ideal. Osmaston adds a preface and notes. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
