Hegel's Philosophy of Mind

by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Translated by William WallaceAbout 7 h 49 min of reading82 chapters

Hegel's Philosophy of Mind is the third and final part of his Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences, the outline of his system first published in 1817. Beginning from the soul as it emerges from nature, Hegel traces mind through anthropology, the phenomenology of consciousness and psychology, then outward into law, morality and the state, and finally to art, religion and philosophy as the forms in which mind knows itself. This edition is the translation by William Wallace, published at Oxford in 1894, which renders Hegel's own paragraphs without the editorial additions. Wallace prefaces the text with five essays on the scope of a philosophy of mind, psychology, ethics and Hegel as a political thinker. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
