The Phantom World; or, The philosophy of spirits, apparitions, &c, &c.

by Augustin Calmet

About 12 h 52 min of reading130 chapters

Augustin Calmet, a learned Benedictine abbot from Lorraine and a celebrated biblical scholar, wrote a celebrated treatise on apparitions, and this English translation by the Reverend Henry Christmas, made from the edition of 1751 and published with a preface and notes in 1850, presents it as The Phantom World. Calmet sets out to examine with critical care the reports of spirits of every kind: good angels and demons in Scripture and tradition, magic, sorcery and possession, ghosts and the return of the dead, and above all the vampires and revenants then reported from Hungary, Moravia and Silesia, which made the book famous. He weighs testimonies and often leaves the question open. It is a remarkable compendium of eighteenth-century belief and doubt.
