The Phantom 'Rickshaw, and Other Ghost Stories

by Rudyard Kipling

About 3 h 03 min of reading5 chapters

Five stories from Kipling's Indian years, written in his early twenties for the Anglo-Indian press. In the title story a civil servant who has jilted a woman is pursued through Simla by her rickshaw after her death. "My Own True Ghost Story" undercuts the genre with a joke, while "The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes" traps an engineer in a crater village of the living dead. The volume also contains "The Man Who Would Be King," in which two loafers set out to rule a kingdom in the mountains beyond Afghanistan, and "The Finest Story in the World," about a London clerk who remembers past lives. The stories range from the comic to the genuinely frightening and show the Kipling of the 1880s at full stretch. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first story is free.
