Puck of Pook's Hill

by Rudyard Kipling

About 3 h 55 min of reading34 chapters

Puck of Pook's Hill, published in 1906, begins on Midsummer Eve, when Dan and Una act a scene from A Midsummer Night's Dream in a Sussex meadow and summon Puck himself, the last of the People of the Hills. Over the summer he brings them visitors from the land's past: Weland the smith-god, a Norman knight who settles among the Saxons, a Roman centurion guarding Hadrian's Wall against the Picts, the Tudor artist Hal o' the Draft, and the fairies of the Dymchurch Flit. Each story is framed by poems, among them "A Smugglers' Song" and "The Children's Song." Rudyard Kipling turns English history into a sequence of human encounters, and this edition keeps Arthur Rackham's illustrations. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
