Just So Stories

by Rudyard Kipling

About 2 h 15 min of reading12 chapters

Just So Stories, published in 1902, is Rudyard Kipling's book of comic origin tales for small children, grown out of the stories he told his own daughter and written to be read aloud, in the same words every time, just so. The whale gets his throat, the camel his hump, the rhinoceros his skin and the leopard his spots; the Elephant's Child, full of insatiable curiosity, finds out what the crocodile has for dinner; the first letter is written and the alphabet made; the crab plays with the sea and the cat walks by himself. Kipling drew the pictures and wrote the captions and the verses, and his repetitions and invented words are part of the pleasure. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
