The Jungle Book
The Jungle Book collects seven stories, each followed by a poem. Three of them follow Mowgli, the human child raised by wolves in the Indian jungle under the tutelage of Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther, hunted by the tiger Shere Khan and eventually cast out by both the pack and the village. The others stand alone: Rikki-Tikki-Tavi the mongoose defends a bungalow against cobras, the white seal Kotick searches for a beach where men do not hunt, and the boy Toomai sees the elephants dance. Kipling wrote them in Vermont and published the book in 1894. The stories are about law, belonging and the price of being different, and they have never been out of print. They are available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first one free.
